Today, there are three things to celebrate I know of and definitively even more.

Today is the 51st anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's history changing space flight and we honor this brave man with a crunching space race.

Today is also the 31st anniversary of first orbital test flight, STS-1, of a Space Shuttle, the Columbia. We also pay tribute to this event.

And of course, today is our very own first anniversary. For one year, we have space on earth where YOU all take part in! This is your day and we want to say a big thank you! Without your help, we wouldn't exist and it's a pleasure to have you.
And we will do our very best to extend our efforts by improving the achieved and to start new things, like we will do next week with the local event of NASA's Space Apps Challenge here in Stuttgart. We hope to see you here and welcome our neighbours in Austria, Switzerland and France. Come on, it's not that far! ;)

When you know another space event in history, post it to this thread.
But today evening, go out to one of all those Yuri's Night event near you!

Let's go!

Hello Everyone,

this is a reminder. Tonight, the Yuri's Space Race will start.

You can join the official team and/or join with your team. Russia Team had been so nice and also started a BOINCStats page for the race (and I couldn't figure out how to join with the official Yuri's Team. Can anyone help?)

Let's have fun and let's celebrate humanities first reach for the stars!

On 12 April, there are two things to celebrate. Firstly and humblest is the first year of distributed computing platform Constellation operation. With your voluntary help we achieved to process almost 50% of the first batch of workunits for the HyEnD hybrid rocket flight altitude optimization.
And secondly it's the 51st anniversary of the first manned space flight achieved by Yuri Gagarin. To honor him there are Yuri's Night events worldwide and there is even one in your area for sure.

But when you will attend one of those great parties, you could also attend this virtual Yuri's Night event and let your computer crunch for science and get some credits for our Yuri's Night team while you are partying hard.
Combined, we want to achieve at least 169,000 credits and hopefully 315,000 credits. Both numbers correspond to the orbital parameters of the apogee at 315 km and of perigee at 169 km of his record breaking flight (In case we will generate more, I will just convert it to feet ;))
You can do that by following the instructions below "Join Constellation" to install the little software called BOINC and attach it to the project you like (hopefully Constellation is one of it ;)) and by joining our Yuri’s Night team on the chosen BOINC project for the duration of the Yuri's Night events.

I myself will temporarily leave my team and join team Yuri and donate my idle CPU cycles to the benefit of all. Gentlemen, it's a space race. I will see you there, let's go!

BOINC Team: Yuri's Night Team (Teamsite on Constellation, but each BOINC project should have this by now)

Hi everyone,

we received some emails after the 28c3, where you asked us how to be involved.

There are quite some ways.

A:
You can participate in the distributed ground station network and help building it. There is a special email list constellation@lists.shackspace.de

B:
You can propose your own project and we would love to let it run on Constellation. So when you need massive computing power for your aerospace simulation or want to build your own sensor grid, just ask us via email (constellation@aerospaceresearch.net) or in our forums.

C:
Or you can just be generous and passivley donate your idle PC time to our project by joining it. This project uses BOINC. If you're already running BOINC, select "Attach to Project". If not, download BOINC.
When prompted, enter http://aerospaceresearch.net/constellation/ .

So there are some ways to do some good for the (science) community, you just have to pick one.
We're really eager to receive more comments.

And here are some FAQs http://shackspace.de/wiki/doku.php?id=project:hgg:faq

What an overwheling response to our project presentation on 28c3. THANK you, but you have to thank yourself, because it's the community that makes this platform run!

Questions?
Just send us an email, follow us on twitter.com/ARDNnews, like our site on facebook.com/AerospaceResearch.net

Hi everyone,

I just came home from 28c3 and it was really fantastic. I will do a summery later, but for all of you, here is the video of our presentation.

http://youtu.be/iuwkzNjaPwc

and we received quite some media coverage.

here are our FAQs
http://shackspace.de/wiki/doku.php?id=project:hgg:faq
These FAQs are very helpful to realize, which press exaggerates a LITTLE bit and which didn't.
There are some false parts, that's aren't facts.

For example, we don't build satellites. That's not part of our paper and video.
And we're not doing internet, also I can't exclude that for future steps. But we're not there yet.

When you have additional questions, just ask. So far only 4 journalists asked directly and 2 wrote an article. ;)

We wish you a merry St Nicholas' Day!

I started to create new posters for constellation and it turned out to be fun that I want to share with all of you.

The purpose ist to use a science bachground, create a slogan, sketch an easy symbol and to reveal the used science.
When you have such an idea, you can source yourself directly underneath the heading tagline with your twitter address.

tweet your slogan with #aerospaceslogan or post it in this thread.

This is my first poster for St Nicholas' Day

I will release all my poster ideas on a daily basis, and I will also release my template (vector Inkscape SVG) that you could use for your sketches.

At the end, I would like to print all posters and pin them on 28c3 congress.

Best regards,

Good news Everyone,

when you want to grab us in real life, the next chance will be on 28c3 in Berlin on 28.12.2011.

Hadez and my paper had ben accepted and we had been scheduled on day 2 of the Chaos Cummunication Congress.

Building a Distributed Satellite Ground Station Network - A Call To Arms
Hackers need satellites. Hackers need internet over satellites. Satellites require ground stations. Let's build them!

http://bit.ly/uLfj5H

We are really flattered, that we will present amoung all those hackers and their creative and important topics. What an honour.

We are really keen to get to know you and discuss our paper and of course we want to know your opinions about life, the universe and everything.
When you will also attend, please drop us a line and we will have a drink there and chat. We will also be around to have some conversations with Part Time Scientist members presenting there and whatever will catch our eyes.

We added a new item on "Make a donation -> Congress: 28c3 Expenses".

See you in space, hackers of earth!

Andreas, over!

One year ago, we opened Constellation for the first wave of users for the beta test. Until then, we really improved Constellation a lot because of your sugestions and remarks. In behalf of the Constellation Team, I want to thank you all. We think that you users are an essential part of our project and we have a place on our team-page. Without you, Constellation wouldn't be possible.

I also want to take this opportunity to give special thanks to our donators, who believe in our platform and made donations. That's propelling our endeavor. Some of you used PayPal and our website system recognizes this and donates "Crowns" on their detail pages. Some of you used Flattr, but this is unfortunately not supported yet. So I would like to offer you Flattr users to send me an email stating their donation (with a proof, like Screenshot) and I will set this "Crown" by hand. As you helped us to improve our system, we should make Flattr and other services create a fitting API, so that BOINC can directly recognize this donation.

This news started with a description of our beta test and it will end with beta tests. Our latest supporter shack e.V. and we are working on a new application for Constellation. This will be a hardware application and serving as a distributed groundstation network. It's currently under development and we can't go into specific details currently. But you can also be part in this and bringing in even the tiniest skill you think can be usefull. We don't promise you when it will be finished or if it will be ever finished, BUT we promise you that we will try our very best to create new and interesting applications to you.

Zum Treffen:
Eintritt frei! Jeder ist willkommen! Um eine formlose Anmeldung (Doodle) wird gebeten.

Could you please introduce yourself?

My name is Andreas Hornig and I'm the head of the Constellation Platform. I'm an aerospace engineer with a Diplom (FH) from University of Applied Sciences Bremen and doing another Diplom with specialisation in Space Systems and Space Applications (Raumfahrtsysteme und Raumfahrtanwendungen) at the University of Stuttgart.

Could you introduce the team that is in charge of the project?

The Constellation team consists of an interdisciplinary mixture from aerospace related professions and topics, from server admins to earth and space enthusiasts. A complete list can be found here and feel free to contact each of us according our expertises. Withouth the team, this project wouldn't be as progressed, as it is today.

We are a rather small team, but we are also a young academics group at the university and are always looking for new team-members, who want to be part of our team and let our team grow.

And we feel, that you, the crunching volunteers, are part of our team, too. You can take part in decisions, like we asked you what duration our workunits should have to please you, or with what frequency you set your check pointing to implement it in our application.
And of course participation is so important for us, that you can also create your own sub-project that can run on the platform.

The complete Interview and a French translation can be found on boinc-af.org

Have a nice race! Thank you for the interview.

Hello Everyone,

today, 21.07.11, there will be a short downtime at 18:00-19:00 CEST due to installation of 2 new RAM bars.

These Samsung M378T5663EH3-CF7 2GB DDR2 800 MHz (PC2-6400) could been bought from your generous donations and the Constellation team wants to say Thank You to all our donaters! We really appreciate your help and support.

The second RAM bar is only partly paid by the donation, as you can see on our Make a Donation page, so you can still support us.

This installation will give us 6GB of RAM in total, that will increase database handling and will also keep our webserver running the BOINC client as well for computing our own Workunits.

Hi Everyone,

today is a special day. Today was the monthly regulars' table of Stuttgart local group of DGLR (German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics). On last year's june regular's table we proposed Constellation to the local group and we found DGLR and Rechenkraft.net as our first supporters. Although the BOINC project was started even before, based on my Diploma Thesis, in june 2011 it started to form a real shape leading to the project you can attach to now. But this is not the end. We still progress and include your ideas and comments.

Another important step was our participation on the "DGLR Raumfahrtkonferenz 2011 - Missionen aus Baden-Württemberg (DGLR Astronautics Conference - Missions from Baden-Württemberg)" in Stuttgart on 30.05.11. We presented our platform, our sub-project(s) and future perspectives to the professional audiences from aerospace business, university personal and other students. We had some real fruitful discussion in our booth and even in the smoking area (at least the smoking part of us :)). There could be some nice collaborations, we're working on it!

If you want to get an impression, we have some pictures on http://www.flickr.com/photos/63534146@N02/sets/72157626730898759/ and there is a slide from Björn Weigel, DGLR local group Stuttgart, on http://scr.bi/lGutFG (German)
If you look close enough you can have a glimpse on our pre-alpha screensaver!

But we don't stop here. Our next stop will be on "6th OpenFOAM workshop - PennState University" (13-16 June 2011), where we unfortunately couldn't attend personally, but we have a poster there.
http://aerospaceresearch.net/constellation/forum_thread.php?id=63
Next time we will and have good news for them in our backpack, at least we have some work in the pipes.

Constellation opens on Yuri's Night - Docking ports open and airlocks ready for space rendezvous

Today is the 50th anniversary of the first manned spaceflight. On April 12th, 1961 soviet cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was the first human to reach outer space when completed an orbit of the Earth onboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft. This historic event is celebrated on several events around the earth under the name "Yuri's Night" since 2001.
http://yurisnight.net/

This important cornerstone in the history of spaceflight not only inspired generations of children to become spacepioneers, but also inspired our Constellation project and we want to celebrate this event by opening our project to the public.
It's our honour and pleasure to invite you to join our community, to discuss aerospace related topics and perhaps to start your own sub-project in our forum and to support scientific research by donating idle CPU time to our platform from this special day on.

Constellation will start with TrackJack application that will optimize trajectories of space-launchers and spacecrafts. The first task is to find the optimum thrustcurve for HyEnD (Hybrid Engine Development), a student group at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. HyEnD is developing a hybrid propellant sounding rocket and is an official DGLR (German Aerospace Society) young-academics group and optimizing the thrust-level is supposed to increase the maximum flight altitude. http://hybrid-triebwerk.de

TrackJack is a Java application and supports Windows 32 & 64 Bit, Linux 32 & 64 Bit and MacOS 32 Bit in automatic download and FreeBSD 32 & 64 Bit as manual installation. More operating systems are planned.

As every space programme Constellation couldn't be realized without help.
We want to thank the DGLR-Stuttgart (german aerospace society) to be an official academic student team at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. http://stuttgart.dglr.de/
We want to thank http://Rechenkraft.net e.V. in Marburg, Germany, the world-wide first voluntary association with purpose to advocate distributed computing, for pieces of advice and funding.
And we want to thank http://Selfnet.de e.V. in Stuttgart for beeing our server hoster.
We are really standing on shoulders of so many giants.

We invite you to be part of Constellation's distributed computing space race and we reccommend to join a Yuri's Night event in your area!
We salute to Yuri and all space pioneers who came before and after him who made this dream possible. Distributed computing for human kind!

About Constellation:
Constellation is a platform for different aerospace related projects that need intensive computational power. The platform supports the efforts of participating projects by providing Distributed Computation capability using
BOINC. Constellation will send work-units of attached projects to volunteering, idle PCs where the units are processed. The combined power of all volunteering users will help to solve important scientific tasks in fields from astronomy to aerospace-engineering beginning from student up to university projects. The bottom line is to benefit from the generosity of the volunteers and to benefit from the accumulation of different projects, like sharing programming knowledge in distributed computing andinfluencing the others' simulation by its own solutions. The platform is an open space for anyone, who is an air and space enthusiast and wants to donate idle computing time or even skill for a sub-project on platform.
Applications for sub-project are welcome!

About Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin:
Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was a Soviet Cosmonaut born 9th march 1934 in Klushino (RUS).
He was the first man in space.
1960 he and 19 other pilots selected for the Soviet space program.
Gagarin and Gherman Titov selected out of the 20 pilots after a training and physical characteristic-tests.
Gagarin (1.57meters) and Titov were short and that was perfect for the small Vostok cockpit.
In an anonymously vote under the 20 pilots (Which other candidate they would like to see as the first man in space), only 3 didn’t chose Gagarin.
On 12th April 1961 he flew with the Spaceship “Vostok 1” and orbited earth it in 108 minutes.
He died in a jet-crash on 27th March 1968, but the cause is uncertain.

Today, on December 21, 2010, winter solstice will occur at 23:38 (or 11.38pm) Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on the northern hemisphere, leading to the shortest day and longest night. So the days will be longer from this day on. This important stellar day and because of imminent christmas the Constellation-Team decided to present you with 100 individual invite-codes for our project.

This will be done with first "come-first, first served" principle and will only last until 2010/12/23-23:59:59UTC, so that we can be sure that anyone will get his/her invite-code before christmas eve.

What you have to do is to contact us with ONE out of three ways and send us your desired nickname and a working email-address. We will then create your account and send you your temporary invite-code/account-password to the given email-address. You will then change the password and the account is officially yours.

For the last action, where users send in really good simulation ideas and they got the invite-codes for their ideas, we promoted it on several websites and forums. This time you will spread the good word, so you can follow twitter account http://twitter.com/ARDNnews and send us a private message to our,
join our facebook-site AerospaceResearch.net http://www.facebook.com/pages/AerospaceResearchnet/146743982016629?ref=ts and stick a PM on our pinwall to this notice (just post a notice without both datas, because WE will contact YOU there to give us the nickname and the email-address. No one else should know your data)
or send us an email to constellation@aerospaceresearch.net. There is only one code for each person so just send in your personal and individual data and only via one of the 3 ways.

Please make sure to send us the both, nickname and your email-address. Both infos will set the delivery time and this will rank you for the 100 give-away invite-codes. We won't accept incomplete inquiries and we can't contact each and every of you 100 people telling you to resend complete data.

We hope that you will like our christmas gift and you will help us to open the project to the public sometime after the christmas holidays.

Have a nice longest night with clear sky for optical astronomy!

The Constellation-Team

PS: Summer solstice will be on the southern hemisphere and if you are living there you are also invited to get a code!

Good news, Everyone!

after we ran out of workunits http://aerospaceresearch.net/constellation/forum_thread.php?id=10 we started to work on some improvements, that's why we haven't created new WUs so far.

Some of you already attached to the TrackJack-Beta app and helped us checking it.
The new things are
* TrackJack app additions and a result fix
* Using Java "JRE 6.0.22" now. It includes security bugfixes.
* switching from ZIP-compression to the OpenSource 7ZIP-compression giving us smaller files. As a result we can decrease datarates and you can receive apps and WUs faster.

Please give us some time to test the beta before we release it in the main-app branch for everybody.

Thank you so far for your help, Andreas

Hi everybody,

we ran out of Workunits and that's actually a good thing!
The last results are beeing processed right now http://aerospaceresearch.net/constellation/server_status.php and after these will have been finished, the team will use this WU-less time to do some re-arrangements. We hope you don't mind!

Afterwards we will create workunits to check the results with previous processed workunits from my Diploma Thesis and do a validation.
There will be more workunits for you, because the current set kept you bussy for JUST one week, and even longer running workunit. The longer running workunits will be even new for me, because they exceeded my personal computing power, so this will be very exciting for me.

The ordinary work will also been done in the meantime, concerning webpages about the project, the team, science ... and everything.

Thank you very much for your help and participation!
