At least as a child you did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately we didn\u2019t quite make it to space ~100km quite yet &#8211; but at &gt;22km we (our balloon that is) have been higher than at least 99.99% of you out there. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commercial airplanes fly at 8.5km to 10.7km to give you something graspable to compare it to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g6H5Qa2K8tY\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ever since we saw the first footage of a camera attached to a weather balloon we became fascinated by the idea to take our own images. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The visible curvature of our small sphere (speak: earth) floating through space captured was ever so inspiring. You don&#8217;t even need to spend a lot of money doing so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project dubbed \u201cspaceballoon\u201d was accomplished by the team (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andreashornig\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">andreashornig<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/excogitation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exco<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/makefoo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">makefu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) collaborating at our local hackerspace &#8211; the shack. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Saturday, 4.3.2017 we successfully launched it from the nearby <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/search?query=48.78511%2C9.28546#map=16\/48.7840\/9.2876\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grillplatz Rotenberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on top of the W\u00fcrttemberg mountain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The launch was exciting &#8211; even more so because we had more than 10 people waiting for us on the hill we chose for takeoff.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here is a visualization attempt of the logged data:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/plot.ly\/~excogitation\/5.embed\" width=\"900\" height=\"800\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nadkaok\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nadka<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made an awesome video with the onboard footage and with some material that was taken by someone at the launch site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the flight path from one of the onboard android phones:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=12UxB6v7EQGDgVj2S0T5eG1df61s\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The &#8222;hunt&#8220; for the balloon was thrilling as we lost contact with our transmitter multiple times.<br \/>\nThrough interpolation and some luck picking up the signal again we were able to pickup the payload &#8211; even though the commercial tracker and the android phone didn&#8217;t tell us their location &#8211; or anything for that matter.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are also really happy that the last minute efforts of team Bremen bore fruits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/niP5QITBaEE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/C6RriSkWAAIGu-F.png:large\" width=\"640\" height=\"652\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As people are already telling us they also have plans (for a long time) to start a weather balloon of their own &#8211; here you can show your hands if you <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/doodle.com\/poll\/tm7sizn73wddrnvs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want to be the \/ a part of the<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> next balloon project.
